About ZanWWIS

Learn more about the Zanzibar Water and Wastewater Information System and our commitment to sustainable water resource management.

ZanWWIS Overview

Background

The Zanzibar Water and Wastewater Information System (ZanWWIS) is an interactive digital platform developed to enhance the collection, management, sharing, and monitoring of water and wastewater data in Zanzibar. It was established in response to persistent challenges in water resources management, including fragmented data integration, limited monitoring systems, and increasing risks of groundwater resources contamination. As Groundwater is the main source of water for domestic use in both Unguja and Pemba, a lack of comprehensive data on its quality, availability, and sustainability remain a significant risk. ZanWWIS aims to close this information gap, enabling evidence-based planning, informed policy-making, and more effective management of water and Sanitation services. `

Field and laboratory assessments have revealed a decline in groundwater quality, with contamination posing a threat to public health and the environment. Current data collection approaches are fragmented, lacking coordination between institutions and relying heavily on manual records. The absence of centralized, real-time data limits the effectiveness of planning, decision-making, and response to water-related challenges. ZanWWIS addresses these gaps by integrating scientific methods, including aquifer mapping, boreholes survey, and hydrochemical analysis, into a centralized system. This enables institutions to track water quality, infrastructure performance, and resource trends more efficiently.

The system supports the goals of the Zanzibar Water and Sanitation Policy 2025 by promoting transparency, accountability, and collaboration among stakeholders. It empowers government agencies, utilities, researchers, and development partners with reliable data for evidence-based planning. By improving access to information, ZanWWIS strengthens resilience, supports efficient resource allocation, and contributes to the sustainable development of the water sector in Zanzibar.

Our Mission

"To provide an interactive and centralized system for collecting, managing, sharing, and monitoring water and wastewater data in Zanzibar, enabling data-driven planning, effective policy-making, and improved service delivery through coordinated stakeholders’ engagement

Our Vision

To be the central hub for all water and wastewater-related information in Zanzibar, fostering transparency, collaboration, and innovation in the management of these vital resources. We envision a future where data-driven strategies lead to improved water security, enhanced environmental protection, and resilient communities.

"To be the leading platform for reliable, transparent, and integrated water resources and wastewater information management in Zanzibar, enabling data-driven decisions for sustainable water resources and sanitation development."
